April 2004 Tracks

  1. The Last BroadcastDoves - There Goes the Fear
This track is definitely my favorite on a great album. The drumbeat and the diving, almost country-ish slide guitar that swoops in the background really give it an amazing sound.
  2. My Morning Jacket - One Big Holiday
Another band recommendation from my sister. My Morning Jacket is from Louisville, and have a bit too much twang in most of their songs for my taste. This track reins that in a bit, and it’s excellent.
  3. Scissor Sisters - Take Your Mama
As usual I can’t say it any better than Pitchfork: “…a clever Primal-Scream-meets-Freedom-90 suggestion to come out to your mother during a night on the town.”
  4. Earl Slick - Believe (featuring Robert Smith)
If you were a 50-year old guitarist best known for collaborations with David Bowie and John Lennon, and you wanted to cash in, maybe you’d hire Robert Smith to do some vocals too.
  5. Modest Mouse - Float On
I admit it, okay. I’m joining the party late. My sister told me she loved these guys but I’m just now finally getting into them. This album is insanely good.
  6. Belle & Sebastian - Stay Loose
I’ve always liked Belle & Sebastian, but there’s rarely been a track I thought was really fantastic. This one, like an AM radio pop masterpiece, actually shines through.
  7. Muse - Time Is Running Out
The British recording industry was reluctant to promote Muse, actually concerned that their sound was too similar to that of something off The Bends-era Radiohead. Maybe it is, but I like it.
  8. Auf der Maur - Followed the Waves
I’ve had a strange thing for Melissa Auf der Maur ever since she replaced Kristen Pfaff in Hole. I had no idea that she could sing, but this is a great, driving rock song.
  9. Lostprophets - Last Train Home
Here’s another example of a song that actually IS getting airplay on mainstream rock stations, but it’s just so good that I really dig it. The fact that The Junkies play it as background music on their segments doesn’t hurt either.
  10. The Killers - Somebody Told Me
Want to hear the soundtrack to your summer? Check out The Killers’ Hot Fuss and rock out like it’s 1985.
