The Postal Service - Such Great Heights
You know how every once in a while a song comes along that just absolutely blows you away? This is one of those songs.
- The Incredible Moses Leroy - 1983
If your name was R. Fountenberry, maybe you’d go by “Moses Leroy” instead too. I still haven’t quite figured out this guy, but his synthesizer obsession at least has me intrigued.
- Blue October - Calling You
Another track that I dig in spite of the fact that the rest of the album is pretty awful and the band itself seems boring as hell.
- Bright Eyes - Lover I Don’t Have to Love
One of these days I’l be able to witness the genius of Conor Oberst in its full glory at a show. So far I’m 0 for 1, having seen one show where he was falling down drunk. This album is just ridiculously good.
- The Distillers - Drain the Blood
Is “Chick Punk” a genre? The fact that lead singer Brodie Dalle used to be married to Rancid’s Tim Armstrong certainly gives her some punk cred.
- The Bens - Bruised
What if I told you that three guys started a band primarily based on the fact that their first names were all “Ben”? Messrs. Folds, Kweller and Lee put together a decent EP, but this track really stands out.
- Blue Man Group - White Rabbit
Blue Man Group covers Jefferson Airplane with some help from vocalist Esthero. Remember what the door mouse said…feed your head.
- Jack Johnson - Rodeo Clowns
Mellow surf-rocker Jack Johnson wrote this track for G. Love and Special Sauce, who recorded it for their 1999 album Philadelphonic, and then manages to cover his own song here.
- The Mars Volta - Televators
My friend Brian got me into this band, which was formed out of the ashes of At the Drive-In, who self-destructed just as they were getting big.
- Guster - Amsterdam
From Pitchfork: “This song is so insidiously catchy it could be the theme to a fucking sitcom.” They’re certainly not lying.
