December 2004 Tracks

  1. EmploymentKaiser Chiefs - I Predict a Riot
For some reason I enjoy that they decided to name themselves after a South African soccer team. I enjoy this song a lot more, though, and I’m digging the rest of the album too.
  2. Lola Ray - Automatic Girl
A great hooky power pop song, which is something I always love. These guys are from NYC and are on Good Charlotte’s label, but don’t hold that against them.
  3. The Music - Freedom Fighters
From Pitchfork: “(Their) vocalist that sounds a lot like Geddy Lee or a cartoon or maybe a cartoon of Geddy Lee”. Dammit, just from typing that now I have the intro to “Tom Sawyer” in my head.
  4. The Dears - Lost in the Plot
Hey, it’s a mid-nineties Britpop record…in the year 2004! A very cool song from an album that I’ve liked more each time I’ve listened to it.
  5. Bloc Party - Banquet
An exceptionally good driving rock song from an exceptionally good album. You’ll be nodding your head to the beat in no time.
  6. McLusky - She Will Only Bring You Happiness
Probably this year’s only radio single to include the line “Our old singer is a sex criminal.” Killer pop music with harmonies and bouncy guitars.
  7. Straylight Run - Existentialism on Prom Night
I have a soft spot for mellow, piano-based emo (which many would argue isn’t really emo). Formed by two of the guys from Taking Back Sunday, I just love this song.
  8. By Divine Right - Soft Machine
This is the kind of track that you’ll inevitably hear on “The O.C.” That certainly should embarass me, but I seem to dig 90% of the stuff that they play on that show.
  9. Switchfoot - Meant to Live
My friend Bill recommended these guys to me…apparently they’re a Christian Rock band. We’ll call them the new Jars of Clay, but mainly because I just fucking despise Creed.
  10. The Chemical Brothers - Galvanize
I really do dig a lot of the Chemical Brothers stuff that they do by themselves. But they really seem to shine when they bring someone in to help out on vocals as Q-Tip does in this case.
