March 2004 Tracks

  1. Singles 93-03Chemical Brothers - The Golden Path
Tom and Ed + Wayne Coyne (The Flaming Lips) = The catchiest, bounciest keyboard riff you’ve ever heard. I heart this song. I dare you to get it out of your head.
  2. Wheat - I Met a Girl
Okay, sure, it sounds like the song in the commercial for every romantic comedy ever made. That doesn’t mean it isn’t a damn good pop song.
  3. Elefant - Misfit
“Tell me your name, tell me your story…cuz I’m in to it.” I’ve tried that pickup line. Sadly, it doesn’t work.
  4. Just Jack - Snowflakes (Cured by the Temple of Jay Mix)
At this point in time, this track has literally been played more than any other song in my iPod/iTunes library. You’ll either love it or hate it, but I can’t get it out of my head to save my life.
  5. Franz Ferdinand - Take Me Out
Being named after Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria is an odd way to find stardom, but you’re going to be hearing a lot of these guys…I can guarantee you that.
  6. The Walkmen - The Rat
If you like straightforward, drum-popping, guitar-pounding rock and roll, this is your new soundtrack. The entire “Bows and Arrows” album is excellent.
  7. The Shins - So Says I
I can neither confirm nor deny that The Shins performed this song on an episode of “Gilmore Girls”. Maybe the fact that they’re on Sub Pop can offset that.
  8. Morrissey - Irish Blood, English Heart
Morrissey’s back, and as happy as ever. I’m not going to say this is the best thing he’s done post-Smiths, but it’s a damn good single.
  9. Azure Ray - New Resolution
More Saddle Creek inbreeding, though this band actually formed in Athens, Georgia before shifting to Omaha. Really good folky, minimalist electronica.
  10. Phantom Planet - Big Brat
Jason Schwartzman is gone (though he was still in the band when the album was recorded), and lead singer Alex Greenwald’s vocals seem to be sneering and screaming, but it’s still infectious.
