March 2007 Tracks

  1. We Were Dead Before the Ship Even SankModest Mouse - Parting of the Sensory
So what happens when a really good band decides they want to add someone else to the songwriting mix and have them play some guitar? They get Johnny. Fucking. Marr. Yes, that Johnny Marr. The result is a fantastic album and this is my favorite track thus far.
  2. The Cloud Room - Hey Now Now
A nice, mellow track about a boring day in New York. It sounds like a Seinfeld episode: “Hey now now, we’re goin’ downtown / And we ride the bus there, pay the bus fare.”
  3. Bright Eyes - Four Winds
This is the first single off of Bright Eyes’ new album Cassadaga. Conor is getting just a little too country for my taste lately and I don’t love this song, but it’s definitely a decent track.
  4. Maximo Park - Girls Who Play Guitars
There really is nothing like a girl who plays guitar. I learned that a long time ago when my friend Bill’s ex-girlfriend picked up his Stratocaster. Girls who play bass ain’t bad either.
  5. Mute Math - Typical
More mellow indie rock…this time from New Orleans’ Mute Math. Their debut EP got a ton of buzz online, making the rounds on MySpace, et al, and the video for this track is pretty cool…they shot the band performing the song backwards.
  6. Editors - Munich
I spent a bit of time trying to think of the best way to describe the Editors’ sound. Start with Interpol, and sprinkle in some of the Edge’s guitar work, and a vocalist that seems to be trying to channel Ian Curtis. Not a bad combination.
  7. The Arcade Fire - Keep the Car Running
This is the first single from the new Arcade Fire album is a pretty good lead. For some reason the rhythm and even the lyrics of this song remind me of something Bruce Springsteen would do.
  8. Fountains of Wayne - Someone to Live
Fairly typical Fountains of Wayne fare here, but as usual it’s a really fun track. You’ll be bobbing your head to this tale of lonely city dwellers as soon as the keyboard kicks in.
  9. The Good, the Bad and the Queen - Kingdom of Doom
For some reason this track gets deeper in my head each time I listen to it. The band is yet another Damon Albarn side project, this time with former members of the Clash, the Verve, and Danger Mouse on production.
  10. The Apples in Stereo - Energy
This is the first song I’ve heard from the Apples in Stereo, and from it I gather that they could be the house band for The Electric Company. The fact that the lead singer’s look could best be described as “indie Costanza” only makes me more fond of them.
