The Hives - Walk Idiot Walk
I thought we’d heard everything we were going to hear from Sweden’s Hives, but they surprised me with one more great single. I don’t expect to hear from them again.
- Beastie Boys - Ch-Check it Out
Adrock, MCA and Mike D’s love letter album to New York is a solid effort, and this while song is pretty standard Beastie fare, it’s definitely catchy.
- Polar Bear - Shafty
Maybe the best post-Jane’s Addiction music put out by anybody in the band. Led by former Jane’s bassist Eric Avery, Polar Bear broke up shortly after this album came out.
- Air - Surfing on a Rocket
Sofia Coppola commissioned them to write the music to her first film, The Virgin Suicides, and Air continually impress me with their gorgeous atmospheric pop songs.
- The Shins - Turn a Square
These guys would be absolutely huge if there was a radio format that would even consider playing them. Amazing sophmore album from a really great band.
- The Von Bondies - C’mon C’mon
It’s probably not a good thing when your claim to fame is having your ass kicked by Jack White. Still, this is a pretty catchy tune.
- Yellowcard - Ocean Avenue
I really do try to stay away from the “Emo Band of the Week”, but this is a really catchy pop song. I swear to you that I don’t watch TRL…
- The Strokes - Under Control
Nothing really new from Julian Casablancas’ band, but a good single just the same. More mellow than their usual tempo.
- PJ Harvey - The Letter
I’ve gone through a lot of different phases in my relationship with Polly Harvey. At first her stuff really annoyed me, then I really dug it. This is somewhere toward the latter.
- Dashboard Confessional - Vindicated
Chris Carrabba’s back and on the Spider-Man 2 soundtrack. More electric than I like from him, but still a good song.
