Acute - Follow You Home
A nice, mellow power-pop track from this LA trio. Solid, clean production on this song that somehow reminds me of the Cars.
- Smashing Pumpkins - Tarantula
The Pumpkins return, minus James Iha, D’arcy Wretzky and Melissa Auf der Maur. So…basically it’s Billy and Jimmy Chamberlin, but it’s still Pumpkins and I dig it.
- Arctic Monkeys - Fluourescent Adolescent
The catchy, bouncy first single on the Monkey’s follow-up album. “You used to get it in your fishnets / Now you only get it in your night dress,” is a pretty classic lyric.
- The Walkmen — Red River
I’ve been waiting for the Walkmen to come up with another great track after The Rat a couple of years back. This track appears on the Spider-Man 3 soundtrack, and it’s pretty solid.
- Interpol — The Heinrich Maneuver
The new Interpol track sounds, well, exactly like most Interpol tracks sound. A great guitar riff and Paul Banks’ decent lyrics keep the track in your head.
- Strata — Cocaine (We’re All Going to Hell)
Hey, we’ve reached the “Lindsay Lohan’s Theme” point in our soundtrack. This song keeps growing on me every time I hear it.
- Satellite Party — Wish Upon a Dog Star
At times I’ve pondered if Extreme axeman Nuno Bettencourt’s Eddie Van Halen-esque guitar work could be put to better use. Apparently Perry Farrell was wondering the same thing. This track doesn’t feature anything amazing as far as Nuno’s guitar goes, but it’s a cool song.
- Plain White T’s — Hey There Delilah
A mellow acoustic track from this Chicago punk/pop band. Their band name was apparently the “best name out of a bunch of really bad names that we thought of.” Eh.
- The White Stripes — Icky Thump
When I want to stand up and bob my head up and down (it happens more often than you might think), very few things make me as happy as hearing new stuff from Jack and Meg White.
- El-P featuring Trent Reznor — Flyentology
Cartoon Network’s Adult Swim created the video for this track. El-P previously collaborated with Atari Teenage Riot’s Alec Empire on a track on the first Handsome Boy Modeling School album. Stir in Mr. Reznor and there are too many connections for me not to find this track interesting.
