Ash - Sometimes
I really discovered Ash much too late. This track is from Free All Angels, which was released back in 2002, but it’s quickly become one of my favorite songs.
- Rooney - I’m Shakin’
Rooney singer Robert Carmine is the brother of former Phantom Planet drummer Jason Schwartzman and their sound is pretty similar to Phantom Planet’s…more power pop bliss.
- Grandaddy - Now It’s On
I suppose the easy comparison to make with these guys would be Radiohead, but somehow Grandaddy’s electronic sound (and their fascination with technology in general) seems more organic.
- Gomez - Bring Your Lovin’ Back Here
For the longest time I tried to find out who the band was that sang the “You’ve got to admit, it’s getting better” jingle at the end of Philips’ plasma TV ads. It’s Gomez, and they’ve put out a couple of really strong albums.
- Finger Eleven - One Thing
This track is pretty indicative of the kind of stuff that mainstream Alternative radio plays at this point, and it’s more or less driven me away and to XM. Still, for some reason this one’s stuck in my head and I like it. The rest of the album is (not surprisingly) pretty disappointing.
- The Faint - Agenda Suicide
The song title suggests something more in the order of Heaven’s Gate than career paralegaling, but instead the song details the wasted days of mindless work in the name of an empty American dream.
- The Flaming Lips - Fight Test
The perfect start to a fantastic album, it’s a call to duty to fight against an army of rebellious androids bent on world domination. If there was any doubt before now, Wayne Coyne is a genius.
- Mike Doughty - Thank You, Lord, for Sending Out the F Train
A great acoustic track from Mike’s first solo album (originally recorded in 1996), Skittish. The best track on one of my favorite albums of all time.
- Howie Day - Perfect Time of Day
My sister has dug Howie for years since he used to play shows at her college. This is the track that finally got me listening to him.
- Black Rebel Motorcycle Club - Stop
The best description I’ve heard of BRMC’s sound: “garage-gone-psychedelic-gone-shoegazer”. This is the lead track on their second album, and kicks it off nicely.
